Description
A. Christmann Riesling Meerspinne Großes Gewächs Bio 2022 is a top-tier dry Riesling from one of the Pfalz region’s most historic vineyards. Certified organic and crafted in the Grosses Gewächs style, it showcases remarkable precision, tension, and elegance. The Meerspinne site, already praised as an outstanding vineyard in the mid-15th century, has long been synonymous with crystalline, ageworthy Rieslings of exceptional purity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Meerspinne GG appears pale straw to light lemon with green reflections, signaling its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is finely etched rather than exuberant, opening with delicate aromas of just-ripe pear and green apple, subtle honeydew melon, and hints of citrus zest. Underneath the fruit lie notes of crushed stone, wet slate, fresh herbs and a cool, almost saline breeze, reflecting the pronounced diurnal shifts of the site.
On the palate, this is all about tension and linearity: bone-dry, focused and finely structured, with a firm, stony backbone. The fruit remains on the restrained side—pear, lime, and melon—wrapped around a very vibrant, persistent acidity that feels both precise and finely polished. The finish is long, salty-mineral and cool-toned, promising excellent development in bottle. While already enjoyable in its youth with a short decant, this Riesling Großes Gewächs has clear aging potential of 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity, texture, and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
The Meerspinne vineyard sits on a southeast-facing slope above Gimmeldingen in the Mittelhaardt area of the Pfalz, benefiting from marked temperature differences between warm days and cool nights. This microclimate helps preserve acidity well into the autumn, giving the wine its characteristic steeliness and precision. Soils are typically a mix of limestone and sandstone with varying proportions of loam and clay, contributing both minerality and finesse. As a certified organic estate, Weingut A. Christmann relies on meticulous, predominantly manual vineyard work, low yields, and careful selection at harvest. Grapes for the Großes Gewächs are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, then gently pressed and fermented with minimal intervention—often with indigenous yeasts—in stainless steel and/or large traditional wooden casks, followed by extended lees contact to build texture while keeping the wine razor-sharp and finely detailed.
Food & Serving
This Riesling GG’s cool precision and high acidity make it an outstanding partner for refined, aromatic cuisine. It pairs beautifully with delicate seafood such as oysters, sashimi, ceviche, or simply grilled fish with herbs, as well as with scallops, crab, or lobster in light citrus or herb-based sauces. Classic Central European dishes like trout with almonds, poached freshwater fish, or white asparagus with hollandaise also work very well, as do subtly spiced Asian dishes—think Vietnamese summer rolls, lightly spiced Thai salads, or sushi. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its tension and minerality. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a carafe to open up the nose and soften the initial austerity; older vintages can be gently decanted just before serving to separate any sediment and fully release their complexity.
