Description
A. Christmann Riesling Meerspinne Großes Gewächs Bio 2020 is a razor‑precise, organically farmed Riesling from one of the Pfalz region’s most historic grand cru sites. Formerly bottled under the name Mandelgarten, this dry Großes Gewächs has reclaimed its traditional vineyard name “Meerspinne,” reflecting both heritage and terroir. The 2020 vintage shows off an especially cool, steely profile, combining depth of fruit with a laser‑like freshness that fans of serious, ageworthy Riesling will appreciate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Meerspinne GG 2020 presents a pale straw to light lemon color with greenish highlights, signaling its youth and tension. The nose is refined and restrained rather than flamboyant, with subtle notes of just‑ripe pear, honeydew melon and a touch of green papaya adding a whisper of exotic fruit. More dominant are the flinty, smoky and wet‑stone aromas, giving the wine a distinct mineral backbone from the first swirl.
On the palate, this is all about precision and structure. The attack is vibrant and linear, driven by brisk acidity that has been preserved by the site’s large diurnal temperature shifts. That steely, flint‑like minerality creates a palpable sense of grip and tension, wrapping around the delicate fruit core of pear, citrus peel, green papaya and a hint of herbal coolness. The finish is long, salty and mouthwatering, with a clarity that promises excellent aging potential. While already impressive in its youth, this 2020 Großes Gewächs is built to evolve beautifully over 8–15 years, gaining complexity and gentle creaminess while retaining its characteristic freshness.
Production
Meerspinne is a historic single vineyard in Gimmeldingen in the Pfalz, set on a southeast‑facing slope that enjoys early morning sun and cool nights. The pronounced temperature difference between day and night, along with a steady flow of cool air, helps the Riesling grapes retain vibrant acidity well into the autumn. Soils here combine elements of limestone and other mineral‑rich substrates, contributing to the wine’s flinty, stony character. Weingut A. Christmann farms this site organically (Bio) and typically with low yields, harvesting by hand to ensure optimal selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, the estate favors a gentle, minimalist approach: careful pressing, fermentation with natural or neutral yeasts, and élevage on fine lees in stainless steel and/or large traditional casks, allowing the vineyard’s precision and minerality to take center stage without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This steely, structured Pfalz Riesling is a superb match for refined, mineral‑driven cuisine. Think oysters, scallops, ceviche or sashimi, where the wine’s acidity and salinity enhance the delicacy of the seafood. It also pairs beautifully with freshwater fish, lightly spiced Asian dishes, veal in creamy sauces, or vegetable‑focused plates with asparagus, fennel or citrus accents. For cheese, try it with young goat’s cheese or a mild, creamy bloomy rind. Serve well‑chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C, to allow the aromatics to open. Young bottles benefit from a short decant of 30–45 minutes to relax the structure and reveal the full spectrum of fruit and mineral notes.
