Description
A. Christmann Riesling Idig Großes Gewächs 2022 in magnum format is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most celebrated single vineyards. Sourced from the steep, southeast-facing Idig site in the Pfalz, this GG combines mineral precision, layered fruit and impressive aging capacity. Bottled in magnum, it offers an even slower, more harmonious evolution—perfect for the cellar or for the table when only a truly great Riesling will do.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Idig GG shows a pale, shimmering straw yellow with green highlights, hinting at both youth and energy. The nose opens with refined white fruit—ripe peach, honeydew melon and yellow quince—wrapped in a cool, stony minerality. With air, more complexity emerges: delicate citrus zest, crushed herbs, a touch of fine tobacco leaf and a subtle smokiness that speaks to the limestone and basalt in the soil.
On the palate, this is a Riesling of quiet power and inner tension. Dry, precise and tightly woven, it balances ripe stone fruit and citrus with a firm, salty-mineral backbone. The texture is silky yet structured, with vibrant acidity driving a long, focused finish where hints of quince, fine spice and chalky limestone linger. In magnum, the wine will develop even more slowly and gracefully; it is already compelling in its youth, but has excellent aging potential—easily 10–15 years or more under good cellaring conditions, gaining depth, complexity and tertiary notes over time.
Production
The Idig vineyard is one of Germany’s most renowned sites, a relatively steep (around 20% incline) southeast-facing slope in the Pfalz, constantly brushed by a gentle wind that keeps the grapes dry and healthy. The soils are dominated by Terra Fusca and limestone, interspersed with small amounts of basalt—material historically brought in from the nearby Pechsteinkopf—giving the wine its distinctive mineral profile and tension. Some of the vines here are still ungrafted (wurzelecht), complemented by carefully selected younger plantings that contribute freshness and vitality to the Großes Gewächs. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy Riesling grapes are selected. In the cellar, Christmann follows a minimal-intervention, precision-driven approach: gentle pressing, spontaneous or carefully controlled fermentations, and élevage on the fine lees in stainless steel and/or traditional large wooden casks, aiming to express the Idig terroir with clarity, depth and elegance.
Food & Serving
This dry, powerful yet finely etched Riesling is an outstanding partner for refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with shellfish (scallops, langoustines, lobster), high-quality sushi and sashimi, and delicately prepared white fish, especially when citrus, fennel or light cream sauces are involved. It also shines with roasted poultry, veal in light jus, and thoughtfully spiced vegetable dishes, such as asparagus, root vegetables or seasonal mushrooms. Serve at 9–11°C to allow the aromatic complexity to unfold without muting the minerality. In youth, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially from magnum, to let the wine open and reveal its full spectrum; older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only to remove sediment if needed.
