Description
Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1996 is one of Champagne’s rarest single-vineyard expressions, crafted entirely from Pinot Noir grown on a tiny 0.68-hectare walled parcel in Ambonnay. A true collector’s bottle, it reflects Krug’s uncompromising pursuit of precision, finesse, and exceptional terroir, with extended ageing in the cellars lending remarkable depth and complexity.
Tasting Notes
Pale golden in the glass, it opens with an inviting aroma of ripe wheat, followed by layers of gingerbread, candied orange peel, and a delicate hint of hazelnut. On the palate, it is full-bodied and intensely structured, yet beautifully elegant, with a long, refined finish and a final lift of citrus fruit.
With its extraordinary concentration and long lees ageing, this Champagne has excellent aging potential and will continue to evolve gracefully over time, developing even more nuance and complexity.
Production
Clos d’Ambonnay comes from a minuscule 0.68-hectare vineyard in the heart of Ambonnay, one of Champagne’s celebrated Pinot Noir villages. Krug acquired the clos in 1994 and produced the first Clos d’Ambonnay in 1995, with the 1996 vintage spending more than 12 years in Krug’s cellars before release. The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir, with meticulous attention paid to preserving the character of this unique terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a Champagne for refined pairings such as lobster, scallops, truffle-based dishes, roast poultry, or aged hard cheeses. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a brief rest in the glass can help the wine fully раскры its aromatics.
Producer
Champagne Krug is one of the most revered houses in Champagne, known for its dedication to individuality, precision, and exceptional long ageing. Founded in 1843, Krug has built a global reputation for producing some of the region’s most expressive and luxurious cuvées, and Clos d’Ambonnay stands as one of its rarest and most celebrated achievements.
