Description
Domaine Nicolas Millet’s Sancerre Le Vallon 2022 is an elegant Loire Valley white made from Sauvignon Blanc, combining fresh floral fruit with the distinctive mineral character of Sancerre. Its 12 months of lees ageing in partially filled 100% acacia barrels give the wine added texture and subtle spice, setting it apart from more overtly stainless-steel-aged examples. The Millet family has cultivated vines in Bué since the 18th century, making this a wine rooted in generations of Sancerre tradition.
Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in appearance, the wine shows a clear, pale colour. The nose is fresh and fruit-driven, with delicate floral notes. On the palate, lively acidity brings energy and precision, while ageing on the lees in acacia wood contributes an elegant, supple texture without overpowering the wine’s natural freshness. The finish is long and mineral, with a gentle touch of spice. Enjoy now for its vibrant character, or cellar it for approximately 5–8 years, during which its texture and mineral complexity should develop further.
Production
The domaine is based in Bué, in the southern part of the Sancerre appellation, where Nicolas Millet farms 14.88 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc for Sancerre Blanc, alongside 4.37 hectares of Pinot Noir for Sancerre Rouge and Rosé. The grapes are gently and slowly pressed using a pneumatic press, then the wine is matured on its lees for 12 months in partially filled barrels made from 100% acacia. This approach preserves freshness while adding depth, finesse and a subtle spiced nuance.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. This Sancerre is an excellent partner for oysters, mussels, grilled fish, seafood salads and fresh goat’s cheese, as well as lighter poultry dishes and vegetable preparations. Decanting is not essential, but a short 15–20 minute aeration in a carafe can help reveal its floral aromas and layered texture, particularly when served young.
Producer
Founded by the Millet family in the 1700s, the domaine is located in the village of Bué, one of the recognised wine-growing areas of Sancerre. In 2008, Nicolas Millet, the ninth generation of the family, began working at the estate and continued its long-standing focus on Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Today, the domaine’s combination of traditional vineyard heritage, careful pressing and extended lees ageing reflects the refined, terroir-driven style for which Sancerre is known.
