Description
Château Couhins-Lurton Cuvée Acte II 2020 is a refined red Pessac-Léognan from one of the most discreet estates within the Graves classification. A rare expression from the smallest family-owned property in the Lurton dynasty—and reportedly the appellation’s smallest Cru Classé—it combines generous dark-fruit character with the elegance and freshness associated with the finest wines of the region.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep cherry-red colour and an expressive nose filled with aromas of dark fruits. On the palate, it is complex, soft and full-bodied, with a beautifully smooth texture and silky tannins. Its freshness provides balance and lift, keeping the rich fruit profile focused rather than heavy.
The 2020 vintage should develop gracefully over the medium term, gaining further harmony and savoury complexity with bottle age. It is already approachable with aeration, but careful cellaring will allow its elegance and mineral character to emerge more fully.
Production
Château Couhins-Lurton’s distinctive clay-limestone soils are unusual within the Pessac-Léognan appellation and contribute both freshness and mineral definition. The estate is particularly associated with fresh, fruit-driven Merlot in its red wines. Specific harvesting and vinification details for this cuvée are not provided, but the polished texture and integrated tannins reflect a careful approach focused on preserving the wine’s purity, balance and elegance.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C alongside roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, grilled veal or richly flavoured mushroom dishes. It also works well with mature hard cheeses. Decant for around 30–60 minutes before serving, especially when enjoying the wine young; older bottles should be handled more gently and may only require a brief airing.
Producer
Château Couhins-Lurton is a small, family-owned estate connected to the Lurton wine dynasty and is regarded as a well-kept secret among the classified wines of Graves. Its clay-limestone terroir and focus on precision, freshness and elegance give the estate a distinctive identity within Pessac-Léognan. The château’s status as the region’s smallest Cru Classé makes it a particularly interesting discovery for collectors and enthusiasts seeking characterful Bordeaux beyond the most familiar names.
