Description
The 2025 Mertesdorf Bruderberg Riesling Kabinett from Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is a vivid, terroir-driven Mosel white that captures the cool, mineral style of the Ruwer with remarkable precision. Sourced from the estate’s tiny monopole site in the Bruderberg, it combines Kabinett lightness with a distinct salty, herbal edge that makes it instantly appealing and highly distinctive. This is a classic German Riesling style with real historical roots in the region’s great vineyard tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, pale straw color with a fine, youthful sheen. The nose is delicately expressive, offering notes of green apple, lime, peach, white flowers, and subtle slatey herbs.
On the palate, it is tense, crisp, and feather-light, with lively acidity carrying citrus and stone-fruit flavors over a strong mineral core. A saline finish, together with its restrained alcohol and clean fruit profile, gives it excellent freshness now and strong aging potential for those who enjoy Kabinett Rieslings developing greater complexity over time.
Production
The Bruderberg is the smallest monopole vineyard of Maximin Grünhaus, located on the Ruwer, a cool tributary of the Mosel. Its east-facing slopes and blue slate soils create the ideal conditions for a precise, racy Riesling with pronounced minerality and aromatic lift. The 2025 vintage was selectively harvested by hand, then fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts in traditional Fuder casks or stainless steel, with minimal intervention and no fining to preserve purity and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a natural match for fish, shellfish, sushi, and lightly spiced Asian dishes, where its acidity and mineral structure bring balance and freshness. It also works beautifully with goat cheese or delicate vegetable dishes. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a brief aeration can help if opened very young.
Producer
Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is one of the Mosel region’s most respected estates, known for its exceptional vineyard sites and long-standing dedication to Riesling. With a history rooted in the former monastic property of St. Maximin, the estate has built a reputation for producing some of the Ruwer’s most precise and site-expressive wines. Its Bruderberg vineyard, in particular, is prized for its rarity and unmistakable character, making it one of the estate’s most sought-after bottlings.
