Description
The 2024 Terroir Kiste from Weingut Maximin Grünhaus offers a focused comparison of Riesling from three historic VDP.GROSSE LAGEN monopole vineyards: Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg. Presented in a generous 4.5-litre collection, it showcases how neighbouring sites on the Ruwer can produce distinctly different expressions of dry and fruit-sweet Riesling within the same estate.
Tasting Notes
Across the collection, the wines display a bright, youthful appearance and an aromatic profile marked by lemon, lime, green apple and pale peach. Herbal notes, hints of mint and a pronounced stony character add further complexity, reflecting the cool climate and slate soils of the vineyards.
On the palate, vibrant acidity provides energy and precision, while clear fruit flavours are complemented by spicy, mineral nuances. Tasting the wines side by side reveals the individual character of each site, from drier, more incisive expressions to wines with a more generous fruit-sweet profile. The wines’ acidity and mineral structure should support further development in bottle, depending on the individual cuvée.
Production
The three vineyards lie on a continuous south-facing slope near the Ruwer, where different slate formations and the region’s cool climate shape the character of the Riesling. The collection brings together wines from the 2024 vintage in both dry and fruit-sweet styles. Specific harvesting and vinification details are not provided, but the selection is designed to highlight the influence of vineyard origin and the contrast between the three sites.
Food & Serving
The dry wines are well suited to freshwater fish, shellfish, poultry, sushi and dishes featuring herbs or citrus, while the fruit-sweet expressions can accompany spicy Asian cuisine, aromatic cheeses and fruit-based desserts. Serve chilled at approximately 8–10°C for the dry wines and 8–9°C for the fruit-sweet styles. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although opening the bottles shortly before serving will allow their aromas to unfold; older or more complex bottles may benefit from brief aeration.
Producer
Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is a historic estate in Germany’s Mosel region, situated in the Ruwer valley. Its vineyards—Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg—are renowned for their individual slate soils and are classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGEN. As historic monopole sites of the estate, they provide an especially clear opportunity to explore how small differences in terroir influence Riesling.
