Description
The 2024 Pinot Noir Herrenstück from Holger Koch is a terroir-driven Ortswein from Baden’s Kaiserstuhl, showcasing the region’s warm, volcanic character in a refined Burgundian style. Hand-harvested fruit, partial whole-bunch fermentation and aging in large oak and seasoned barriques give the wine precision, texture and quiet complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a translucent ruby hue. The nose is lifted and expressive, with red cherry, raspberry, subtle spice, and hints of smoke and herbs.
The palate is elegant and juicy, with fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and a clear, balanced finish. It has the structure to develop gracefully over the next few years, though it is already charming for its purity and finesse.
Production
The Herrenstück site lies in southern Baden on the Kaiserstuhl, where volcanic weathered soils with a layer of loess lend Pinot Noir structure, mineral tension and gentle spice. Warm days support full ripeness, while cooler nights help preserve freshness and lift.
The grapes were selectively hand-picked, with part of the crop vinified as whole clusters. Fermentation took place spontaneously with natural yeasts, followed by maturation in large wooden casks and used barriques. Extended time on the fine lees added depth and texture without masking the site’s character.
Food & Serving
A versatile food wine, it pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, veal loin, herb-crusted lamb, mushroom dishes and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Serve at 15–16 °C; decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help the wine open up if enjoyed young.
