The 2024 Mertesdorf Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett from Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is a beautifully understated Mosel classic: precise, light-footed, and full of charm. Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a bright, pale straw color with a lively shimmer. The nose is expressive and inviting, opening with apple, vineyard peach, and citrus, followed by subtle herbal tones, floral accents, and a distinct slate spice. On the palate, it is juicy and wonderfully agile, with fine sweetness perfectly matched by racy acidity. The red Devon slate lends a salty, precise mineral edge, while the finish is clean, würzy, and impressively long. Enjoyable now for its freshness and clarity, it will also gain added complexity over the next several years.

Production
The Herrenberg site in Mertesdorf is defined by red Devon slate and a slightly cooler, less steep exposure than the neighboring Abtsberg, resulting in wines with succulent fruit, spice, and early accessibility. Grapes are selectively harvested by hand and gently pressed, with spontaneous fermentation using natural yeasts in traditional Fuder casks or stainless steel. The wine is made with low must weight in a classic Kabinett style and remains un-fined to preserve its authentic Ruwer character.

Food & Serving
This Kabinett is a natural match for trout, poultry, and lightly spiced Asian dishes, where its freshness and subtle sweetness can shine. It is also excellent with goat cheese or delicate vegetable dishes. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is not necessary.
