The 2024 Grünlack Riesling Spätlese from Schloss Johannisberg is a classic Rheingau Riesling presented in an impressive 1.5-litre magnum. Schloss Johannisberg is one of Germany’s most historic Riesling estates and is closely associated with the development of the Spätlese style following the celebrated late-harvest discovery of 1775.

Tasting Notes
Bright and expressive, this Spätlese opens with aromas of ripe peach, apricot, yellow apple and mandarin, complemented by floral and lightly herbal nuances. On the palate, it is juicy and concentrated, with a lively line of acidity that keeps the fruit sweetness fresh and well defined. Citrus and stone-fruit flavours lead into a long, gently salty finish with a subtle mineral character. The balance of sweetness, acidity and concentration gives the wine excellent ageing potential. It can be enjoyed in its youthful, fruit-driven phase, while further bottle development should bring greater aromatic complexity and a softer, more integrated texture. The magnum format is particularly well suited to extended maturation.

Production
The wine comes from the vineyards of Schloss Johannisberg, a site planted entirely to Riesling. Its elevated position above the Rhine, together with soils influenced by Taunus quartzite and loess, contributes both ripe fruit character and mineral tension. For this Spätlese, carefully selected, fully mature Riesling grapes were harvested during the challenging 2024 vintage. The preserved natural fruit sweetness is balanced by clear, refreshing acidity, allowing the wine to remain light on its feet despite its concentration.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This elegant Spätlese is a natural partner for foie gras, duck liver, Thai curry and Vietnamese dishes with moderate spice. It also complements blue cheese and desserts that are not overly sweet, particularly those featuring apricot, peach or citrus. Decanting is not essential, although a brief period in a carafe can help open the wine when served young; alternatively, simply allow it to develop in the glass.
