Description

The 2024 Domaine Henri Bourgeois Sancerre Blanc “Les Baronnes” is a crisp, finely etched expression of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, crafted by one of Sancerre’s benchmark producers. Les Baronnes is prized for its precision, purity, and balance, offering a textbook take on the region’s limestone-driven style. This cuvée has long been a reference point for wine lovers seeking an authentic, terroir-focused Sancerre that is both sophisticated and refreshingly approachable.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Les Baronnes shows a pale, luminous straw color with subtle green reflections, signaling its youthful vibrancy. The nose is immediately expressive, with lifted aromas of citrus zest, early-season gooseberry, and green apple, layered with classic Sancerre notes of flint, chalk, and a gentle hint of fresh-cut herbs. On the palate, this wine is sleek and finely structured, combining bright lemon and lime with crunchy pear and white currant. A precise line of minerality runs through the mid-palate, giving a sensation of wet stone and sea spray that lingers into the finish. The acidity is brisk but well-integrated, making the wine both mouthwatering and beautifully balanced. Enjoyable now for its energy and purity, it should develop additional nuance and texture over the next 2–4 years, gaining complexity while retaining its hallmark freshness.

Production
Les Baronnes is sourced from hillside vineyards in Sancerre, where Sauvignon Blanc vines grow on a mosaic of clay-limestone and flint (silex) soils that are key to the wine’s tension and mineral drive. The Loire’s cool continental climate, marked by sunny days and cool nights, helps preserve the grape’s natural acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, ensuring careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to protect delicate aromatics and highlight purity of fruit, followed by maturation on fine lees to enhance texture and complexity without overshadowing the wine’s vibrant, mineral backbone.

Food & Serving
This Sancerre Blanc is a natural partner for seafood—think oysters on the half shell, shellfish platters, grilled prawns, or simply prepared white fish with lemon and herbs. It also shines with goat cheese (especially Crottin de Chavignol from the region), fresh salads with citrus or vinaigrette, sushi, and light vegetable dishes such as asparagus or spring pea risotto. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize its freshness and aromatics. Decanting is not necessary, but pouring the wine into larger white wine glasses and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help its mineral and citrus notes fully unfold.

Producer
Domaine Henri Bourgeois is one of the most respected and longstanding family estates in Sancerre, with a winemaking history spanning several generations in the small village of Chavignol. Over time, the family has assembled an impressive patchwork of vineyards across some of the appellation’s finest slopes, allowing them to craft detailed, terroir-driven expressions of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. They are widely regarded as key ambassadors for Sancerre, helping to elevate the region’s international reputation for premium, mineral-driven white wines. Through meticulous vineyard work and a focus on expressing site rather than overt winemaking, Henri Bourgeois has earned a reputation for consistency, elegance, and authenticity across their range, with Les Baronnes often serving as the gateway into their style.
