Description
The 2024 Cantina Terlano Alto Adige Lagrein showcases one of Alto Adige’s most characterful native red grapes in a fresh, vividly expressive style. Crafted by the renowned cooperative Cantina Terlano, this Lagrein captures the contrast of Alpine coolness and Mediterranean warmth that defines the region. It’s a polished yet authentic red, ideal for those looking to explore beyond the classic Italian varieties.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Lagrein typically shows a deep, opaque ruby to purple hue with violet reflections, hinting at its concentration and youthful energy. The nose is generous and inviting, with notes of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and plum, layered with cocoa, violet, and a subtle spicy edge—often pepper, licorice, and a touch of graphite or earth.
On the palate, expect a medium to full-bodied wine with juicy dark fruit at its core—think blackcurrant, mulberry, and black cherry—lifted by fresh acidity and supported by firm yet well-rounded tannins. The cool Alto Adige climate usually brings a clean, precise structure, while Lagrein’s character adds a pleasantly savory, slightly smoky undertone on the finish. In its youth, the 2024 vintage will be vibrant and fruit-driven, drinking well upon release, with the structure to evolve nicely over 4–7 years in bottle, gaining more complexity, spice, and silky texture.
Production
Grown on the steep, sun-exposed slopes of Alto Adige, this Lagrein benefits from a unique terroir: mineral-rich, well-drained soils (often porphyry and volcanic rock) and a striking diurnal range where warm days are followed by cool nights. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure only healthy, optimally ripe clusters make it to the cellar. At Cantina Terlano, gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or large neutral vessels help preserve the vibrant fruit character, while a period of aging—often in a mix of large oak casks and/or used barrels—helps soften the tannins and add subtle spice without overwhelming the grape’s natural freshness.
Food & Serving
This Lagrein is a natural match for hearty, flavorful dishes: think grilled lamb chops, braised beef, venison, or game stews, as well as charcuterie, speck, and mature Alpine cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, roasted root vegetables, and rich pasta dishes with ragù. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and depth. Young bottles can benefit from a brief decant of 30–45 minutes to let the aromatics open and the tannins soften, especially if enjoyed in the first couple of years after release.
Producer
Cantina Terlano (Kellerei Terlan), founded in 1893, is one of Alto Adige’s most respected cooperatives and a benchmark producer for the region. Located in the village of Terlano, it brings together small growers farming some of the area’s most prized high-altitude vineyards, where steep slopes and complex soils yield wines of remarkable precision and longevity. While internationally acclaimed for its age-worthy whites, Terlano has also built a strong reputation for characterful, terroir-driven reds such as Lagrein. The winery is known for meticulous vineyard management, low yields, and a philosophy that emphasizes purity, minerality, and elegance—qualities that have earned it a loyal following among sommeliers and collectors worldwide.
