Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling is pale straw with green reflections, shimmering with youthful brightness. The nose is immediately expressive and distinctive: smoky, flinty and intensely mineral, layered with ripe citrus (lime, grapefruit zest), white peach, mirabelle, and hints of wild herbs, crushed stone, and a subtle floral note of white blossom. A gentle, almost salty, volcanic smokiness runs through the bouquet and marks it unmistakably as Felsenberg. On the palate, the wine is bone dry, tightly focused and unusually complex, with a fine, racy acidity that feels both energetic and refined. Citrus and stone fruit are wrapped in a cool, stony core, with notes of grapefruit, lime peel, underripe pineapple, and yellow plum supported by a deep, smoky, crystalline minerality. The texture is precise and linear yet with impressive concentration and length, finishing very long with a mouthwatering, salty-mineral echo. This 2023 has excellent aging potential; while already captivating in its youth, it will gain in complexity, harmony and depth over 10–15 years and comfortably longer in a good cellar.

Production
The Felsenberg vineyard in Schlossböckelheim is a steep, south-facing slope directly exposed to the Nahe River, where old Riesling vines (around 25–35 years of age) grow under extreme conditions in weathered red volcanic rock—porphyry and melaphyr. This warm, quickly heating, stony soil stores daytime heat and radiates it back at night, yielding grapes of great ripeness balanced by a signature smoky, spicy minerality. At Dönnhoff, the Felsenberg grapes for the Felsentürmchen GG are rigorously hand-harvested in multiple passes, allowing only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters from the best parcels around the “little rock tower” at the vineyard’s core. In the cellar, vinification is deliberately gentle and traditional: slow, cool fermentation—often with ambient yeasts—typically in stainless steel and large German oak (Stückfass), followed by maturation on the fine lees to build texture and complexity without masking the purity of the terroir. The result is a profoundly terroir-driven Riesling that transparently reflects its volcanic origin.

Food & Serving
This Grosses Gewächs is superb as an elevated aperitif, where its tension and mineral drive sharpen the appetite. At the table, it pairs beautifully with refined poultry dishes (roast chicken or guinea fowl with light jus), pork (particularly tenderloin or schnitzel with lemon), and a wide range of fish and seafood—think grilled or poached white fish, scallops, or trout with herbs and citrus-based sauces. It also works wonderfully with Asian-inspired dishes that balance freshness and spice, such as lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese cuisine. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its precision and aromatic detail. Young bottles will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a carafe to allow the smoky, mineral notes to unfold; older vintages should be handled more gently, with brief or no decanting, to preserve their developed bouquet.
