2023 Silberlack Riesling VDP.Grosses Gewächs trocken is the dry flagship wine from Schloss Johannisberg, one of the Rheingau’s most historic Riesling estates. Sourced from selected parcels of the single vineyard VDP.Grosse Lage Schloss Johannisberger, it combines ripe fruit and depth with precise acidity, mineral tension and impressive ageing potential. Johannisberg has been devoted exclusively to Riesling for centuries and is closely associated with the grape’s history, including the celebrated discovery of Spätlese in 1775.

Tasting Notes
The wine is youthful and compact, with a bright, pale golden appearance. Its nose opens gradually to reveal yellow peach, apricot, ripe apple, lemon and grapefruit zest. With air, delicate white flowers, herbs and a subtle spicy, almost smoky nuance add further complexity. On the palate, Silberlack is substantial and concentrated without feeling heavy. Ripe, juicy fruit is framed by lively acidity, while citrus peel, stone fruit and herbal notes bring a gentle phenolic grip. A salty, stony minerality adds tension to the long, dry and lightly spicy finish. Still tightly wound in its youth, this Riesling should develop beautifully over the next decade and beyond, with bottle age bringing notes of dried citrus, wax, herbs and deeper mineral complexity.

Production
The grapes come from selected parcels within the Schloss Johannisberger VDP.Grosse Lage, whose exposed position above the Rhine benefits from slow, even ripening. Soils of Taunus quartzite and loess contribute both mineral character and structure. Made from Riesling and crafted in the traditional Schloss Johannisberg cellar, the vinification is focused on expressing the balance between fruit, texture, acidity and site rather than on prominent oak flavours. The 2023 vintage provides a particularly successful combination of ripe fruit, substance and refreshing acidity.

Food & Serving
A serious, food-friendly Riesling, Silberlack is an excellent match for turbot, pike-perch, char and lobster, as well as veal, poultry and dishes with light, creamy sauces. Its structure also makes it a natural partner for mushrooms, risotto and more substantial vegetarian cuisine. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes of air in a decanter or a large wine glass will help this young, concentrated wine reveal its floral, herbal and mineral layers.
