Description
The 2023 Rüdesheim Bischofsberg Riesling trocken from Weingut Alexander Schregel is a finely etched Rheingau Riesling that showcases one of Rüdesheim’s most characterful sites. Hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented, and made with a decidedly minimal-intervention approach, it delivers a pure and uncompromising expression of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a bright, crystalline profile with cool-toned citrus, green apple, and a subtle herbal edge. The palate is taut and energetic, driven by precise acidity and a distinct saline mineral streak that gives the wine both tension and finesse.
The finish is long, clean, and remarkably focused, with a chalky, almost stony clarity that lingers beautifully. Thanks to its structure and freshness, it should age well over the next several years, gaining extra depth and complexity without losing its precision.
Production
Bischofsberg is one of the defining vineyard sites around Rüdesheim, shaped by slate, quartzite, and loess soils, with the Rhine helping to moderate the climate and preserve freshness in the grapes. The fruit is selectively hand-picked, then spontaneously fermented and matured with minimal intervention in stainless steel, with some portions aged in wood and extended lees contact to build texture while keeping the wine transparent and site-driven.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine, ideal with sushi and sashimi, grilled zander with lemon butter, herb-roasted poultry, or vegetarian dishes featuring fennel and citrus. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short aeration can help if you want to open up its aromatic detail.
Producer
Weingut Alexander Schregel is a small, hands-on Rheingau producer focused on precise, terroir-driven wines that reflect their origin with clarity and restraint. The estate’s style is rooted in careful vineyard work and low-intervention winemaking, earning it recognition for crafting Rieslings that are both technically exact and full of regional character.
