Description
The 2023 Rüdesheim Berg Roseneck Riesling trocken from Weingut Alexander Schregel is a terroir-driven Rheingau Riesling with striking precision, saline tension, and a distinctly mineral edge. Sourced from one of the region’s great steep sites, it reflects both the elegance of cool-climate Riesling and the historical reputation of the Rüdesheim hills for producing wines of depth and character.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, this Riesling opens with a finely etched nose of lime, citrus zest, and cool herbs, layered over a flinty, stone-driven mineral character. The aromatics are crisp and focused rather than lush, giving the wine a restrained, elegant profile.
On the palate, it is taut, vibrant, and mouthwatering, with precise acidity, a clean saline line, and a subtle grip that adds texture. The finish is long, crystalline, and lifted, with enough concentration to suggest very good aging potential over the next several years, where it should gain complexity and nuance while retaining its freshness.
Production
The Berg Roseneck is a celebrated steep vineyard site in Rüdesheim, shaped by schist and quartzite soils and an exposed position above the Rhine. These conditions create a cool, wind-influenced microclimate that supports slow ripening and helps preserve the wine’s linearity and mineral precision. The grapes are selectively harvested by hand and spontaneously fermented, then matured with minimal intervention in stainless steel and partly in wood, alongside extended lees aging to build structure and depth.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a natural match for sushi, sashimi, and delicately grilled fish such as zander with lemon butter. It also works beautifully with herb-roasted poultry, goat’s cheese, or vegetarian dishes featuring fennel and citrus. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a brief period in the glass can help it खुल? No, better: help it reveal more detail and aromatic nuance.
