The 2023 Mertesdorf Bruderberg Riesling Spätlese from Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is a finely tuned Mosel specialty, drawn from one of the estate’s smallest and most distinctive parcels. Sourced from the steep, east-facing Bruderberg site, it combines ripe fruit, slate-driven precision, and the kind of elegant sweetness that has made Mosel Spätlese famous for generations.

Tasting Notes
Bright and expressive in the glass, this Spätlese shows a clear, luminous profile that hints at both freshness and concentration. The nose opens with citrus, peach, and mirabelle, layered with herbs, blossom, and a distinct slate spice that gives the wine its unmistakable Mosel character. On the palate, it is fruit-forward yet remarkably precise, balancing fine sweetness with a vibrant, mouth-watering acidity. The mineral core feels salty and tense, carrying the wine into a long, spicy, elegant finish. Thanks to its structure and balance, it has excellent aging potential and should evolve beautifully over time.

Production
The Bruderberg is a tiny 1-hectare monopole within the historic Maximin Grünhaus holdings, defined by poor blue slate soils and its east-facing exposure, which helps preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes are selectively harvested by hand in multiple passes, with some botrytis contributing depth and complexity. Fermentation with native yeasts in traditional Fuder casks or stainless steel, followed by unclarified élevage, preserves clarity, purity of fruit, and a strong sense of terroir.

Food & Serving
This Riesling is a natural match for fish, shellfish, and Asian dishes, where its sweet-acid balance can complement both delicate and spiced flavors. It also works beautifully with blue cheese or fruit-based desserts. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary unless the wine is particularly youthful and you want to allow it a little extra time to open.
