Description
The 2023 Mertesdorf Abtsberg Riesling Kabinett from Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is a beautifully precise Mosel wine that combines finesse, purity, and the unmistakable character of steep slate vineyards. As a VDP.Grosse Lage wine from the estate’s most prized site, it reflects one of Germany’s most historic and respected Riesling traditions.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, it shows the classic brightness and lift of Mosel Riesling. The nose opens with crisp apple, citrus, and white peach, layered with delicate blossom notes and a distinct slate-driven spiciness.
On the palate, it is light-footed yet focused, with a fine balance of gentle sweetness and lively acidity. The wine feels sleek and racy, finishing with cool minerality, clarity, and impressive length. It has excellent aging potential and should develop additional depth and complexity over time.
Production
The Abtsberg site is defined by steep Devonian slate slopes, which help produce wines of striking mineral tension and aromatic precision. Grapes are selectively hand-harvested in multiple passes from the steepest parcels to ensure optimal ripeness and balance.
Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts in traditional Fuder casks and stainless steel, followed by aging without fining to preserve the wine’s natural texture, minerality, and delicate structure.
Food & Serving
This Kabinett is a versatile food wine, ideal with fish, lightly spiced Asian dishes, vegetable-forward plates, goat cheese, or fruit-based desserts. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting is generally not necessary, though a short aeration can help if served very young.
Producer
Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is among Germany’s most historic estates, with deep roots in the Mosel and a long-standing reputation for producing wines of refinement and terroir expression. The Abtsberg is considered the estate’s grand cru site, admired for its steep slate slopes and its ability to produce Rieslings of elegance, precision, and longevity. The winery has earned widespread acclaim for its consistent quality and its role as one of the benchmark producers in the region.
