Description
The 2023 Lorch Pfaffenwies Riesling trocken from Weingut Breuer is a beautifully precise Rheingau steep-slope Riesling, shaped by one of the region’s coolest and most mineral-driven sites. Grown in the Pfaffenwies vineyard in Lorch, it combines crisp fruit, striking slate-and-quartzite character, and the classic tension that has made Breuer one of the most respected names in German Riesling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, pale straw color with a vivid, youthful clarity. The nose opens with lime, lemon zest, white peach, and fresh herbs, backed by a cool, stony spice that reflects the vineyard’s slate and quartzite soils.
On the palate, the wine is taut, focused, and elegant, with precise acidity and a distinct saline-mineral edge. Citrus and stone fruit are carried by excellent structure and a long, clean finish. This is a Riesling built for aging, with the concentration and balance to evolve gracefully over the coming years.
Production
The grapes come from the steep Pfaffenwies site in Lorch, where cool winds and a long growing season help preserve freshness and aromatic detail. The soils of slate and quartzite give the wine its firm mineral backbone and deep sense of place. Harvested by hand, the fruit is spontaneously fermented and matured in large wooden casks with extended lees contact to build texture, complexity, and balance while keeping the style pure and terroir-driven.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a natural match for fish, shellfish, and refined dishes where freshness and precision matter. It also works especially well with Asian cuisine and goat cheese. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short airing can help if opened young.
Producer
Weingut Breuer is one of the benchmark estates of the Rheingau, widely admired for its site-specific Rieslings and elegant, mineral style. The winery has played an important role in defining the modern quality image of the region, with a focus on steep vineyards and meticulous winemaking. Its wines are consistently recognized for purity, structure, and impressive aging potential.
