The 2023 Lorch Kapellenberg Riesling trocken is a striking example of cool-climate Rheingau Riesling, shaped by one of the region’s most original and exposed sites. Crafted by Weingut Alexander Schregel with a clear focus on purity and terroir, it delivers a precise, mineral-driven style that speaks directly of its steep slate and quartzite slopes above the Rhine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a pale, bright colour with a very crystalline appearance. The nose is cool and restrained, opening with lime, lemon zest, wet stone and a subtle herbal edge that feels distinctly alpine in its freshness. On the palate, it is taut, linear and energetic, with racy acidity, salty mineral depth and a fine, almost tactile grip. Notes of citrus peel, green herbs and crushed stone carry through to a long, vibrating finish. While already highly expressive, it should also reward a few years of cellaring, gaining extra depth and complexity over time.

Production
The grapes come from the steep Kapellenberg site in Lorch, one of the coolest and most original vineyards in the Rheingau, where slate and quartzite soils and strong influence from the Rhine create a highly mineral, finely chiseled wine style. The fruit is selectively hand harvested, then spontaneously fermented, with élevage carried out with minimal intervention in stainless steel and partly in wooden casks, followed by extended lees contact to preserve precision and site character.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent partner for sushi and sashimi, grilled pike-perch with lemon butter, herb-roasted poultry, goat cheese, or vegetarian dishes with fennel and citrus. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C. Decanting is not necessary, though a short period in the glass can help open up its aromatic layers.
