Description
2023 Hallgarten Riesling trocken from Weingut Alexander Schregel is a precise, terroir-driven Rheingau Ortswein that showcases the cool, elevated sites around Hallgarten at their best. With its combination of tension, salinity, and aromatic clarity, it reflects the estate’s ‘more vineyard, less cellar’ philosophy and a very pure expression of site and vintage.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, this Riesling opens with a bright, inviting nose of lemon, pomelo, stone fruit, and fresh herbs, lifted by subtle floral notes of chamomile and rose water. The palate is taut and vibrant, with crystal-clear acidity, a saline mineral streak, and a long, focused finish.
The 2023 vintage in the Rheingau delivered balanced, fruit-driven Rieslings with fine structure and elegant acidity, making this wine enjoyable now while also giving it the potential to develop greater complexity over the coming years.
Production
The fruit comes from high-altitude parcels around Hallgarten, including Hendelberg, Jungfer, and Würzgarten, where cooler conditions help preserve freshness and bring out herbal spice and mineral precision. Diverse soils of gravel, loess loam, and slate add layers of complexity. After selective hand harvesting, the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation and is bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur, preserving a raw and authentic sense of origin.
Food & Serving
An excellent match for sushi and sashimi, grilled zander with lemon butter, herb-roasted poultry, or vegetarian dishes featuring fennel and citrus. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C; decanting is generally unnecessary, though a short period in the glass can help the aromatics open up.
Producer
Weingut Alexander Schregel is known for a thoughtful, minimal-intervention approach that places strong emphasis on vineyard character and regional identity. Based in the Rheingau, the estate works with a clear focus on precision and transparency, crafting wines that highlight site expression rather than cellar influence. This style has made the producer especially appealing to fans of elegant, mineral Rieslings.
