Description
The 2023 Chardonnay “Eola Springs Vineyard” from SOM is a striking example of Oregon terroir at its best: precise, mineral-driven, and beautifully elegant. Sourced from one of the Eola-Amity Hills’ most respected sites, it captures the cool influence of the Van Duzer Corridor while showing a refined, Burgundian sense of balance and finesse. This is a site-specific Chardonnay that combines freshness, depth, and impressive ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, polished profile with a focused expression of citrus, white peach, nectarine, and ripe pear. Floral notes weave through the fruit, joined by subtle hints of toasted hazelnut, flint, brioche, and a delicate saline edge that becomes more pronounced with air.
The palate is precise and layered, with vibrant acidity giving the wine energy and definition. A creamy mid-palate and mineral tension create real dimension, leading to a long, salty finish. It is already highly enjoyable now, but has the structure and complexity to develop beautifully over the next several years.
Production
The grapes come from Eola Springs Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, where volcanic soils and the cooling Pacific breezes funneled through the Van Duzer Corridor help preserve freshness and aromatic detail. Fruit is selectively hand-harvested and handled gently to maintain purity and site expression. Fermentation takes place largely in French oak, with restrained use of new wood, followed by extended lees ageing to build texture, complexity, and a fine creamy mouthfeel.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is an excellent match for lobster, scallops, turbot, and other elegant seafood dishes, especially those with butter, citrus, or light herb accents. It also works beautifully with poultry, truffle dishes, veal sweetbreads, or refined French-inspired cuisine. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and consider a short decant if you want to open up its aromatic layers.
