Description
Borgogno No Name 2023 is a characterful Piedmontese red made from Nebbiolo, offering much of the varietal’s classic elegance in a more approachable format than Barolo. Its distinctive name reflects Borgogno’s historic decision to release the wine outside the Barolo appellation as a statement of independence and respect for the grape’s identity.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red with garnet reflections, the wine opens with lifted aromas of red cherries, raspberries and violets, accompanied by hints of dried herbs, liquorice and subtle spice. On the palate, it is fresh and refined, with flavours of sour cherry, red plum and cranberry supported by Nebbiolo’s characteristic fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. The finish is savoury and persistent, with notes of anise and gentle earthiness. It can be enjoyed now with a little aeration, while careful cellaring over the next several years should allow additional aromatic complexity to develop.
Production
Produced in Piedmont from Nebbiolo cultivated in the Langhe hills, where calcareous soils, hillside vineyards and a continental climate help preserve freshness while encouraging aromatic concentration. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified to highlight Nebbiolo’s natural perfume, structure and transparency. Borgogno’s traditional approach typically combines fermentation in concrete with maturation in large wooden vessels, giving the wine time to soften without masking its Piedmontese character.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Its bright acidity and savoury tannins make it a natural partner for tagliatelle with ragù, risotto with mushrooms, roasted poultry, grilled sausages and aged cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a 30–60-minute aeration can help open the wine’s floral aromas and smooth its youthful tannins.
Producer
Founded in 1761, Borgogno is one of Piedmont’s historic wine houses and a long-standing name in Barolo. The estate is known for combining traditional winemaking methods with a strong focus on expressing the character of its vineyards and grapes. No Name has become one of the winery’s most recognisable wines, offering a distinctive and accessible interpretation of Nebbiolo while reflecting Borgogno’s independent spirit.
