Ornellaia is one of Tuscany’s most celebrated Supertuscans, a wine that has helped define the prestige of Bolgheri on the world stage. Tasting Notes
Deep, polished ruby in the glass, the 2022 Ornellaia opens with an expressive nose of cassis, dark berries, and ripe plum, layered with tobacco, vanilla, graphite, and Mediterranean herbs. It feels generous yet refined, with an aromatic profile that is both ripe and lifted. On the palate, the wine is dense and powerful, but never heavy. Fine-grained tannins, a clear structural core, and mineral depth give it impressive balance, while the finish is long, spicy, and beautifully composed. Built for the cellar, it has excellent aging potential and should evolve gracefully for many years.

Production
The vineyards of Bolgheri benefit from warm Tuscan sunshine, cooling maritime breezes, and a diverse mix of soils that add complexity and freshness to the wines. For 2022, the grapes were harvested by hand in small baskets, followed by strict double sorting to ensure only the best fruit was vinified. The wine was then aged for 18 months in barriques, 70% of them new, and later refined further in barrel and bottle before release.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for grilled or roasted beef, lamb, game, and aged Pecorino, where its structure and depth complement rich savory flavors. It also pairs beautifully with dark chocolate. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if enjoying it young to help the wine open fully.

Tenuta dell’Ornellaia was founded in 1981 and quickly became one of the iconic names of the Supertuscan movement, helping establish Bolgheri as one of Italy’s great fine-wine regions. Since 2005, the estate has been owned by the Frescobaldi family, whose stewardship has reinforced Ornellaia’s international reputation for quality. The 2022 vintage also marks a transition between winemakers Axel Heinz and Marco Balsimelli, adding an extra layer of interest to this important release.
