Description
The 2022 Olivier Leflaive Saint-Romain is a refined white Burgundy that captures the cool, high-altitude character of this cliffside village overlooking the Côte de Beaune. Sourced from well-regarded Saint-Romain lieux-dits such as En Poillange, La Perrière, Combe Bazin and Chevrot en Sous le Château, it offers a particularly chiselled, mineral expression of Chardonnay. Saint-Romain’s vineyards have been cultivated since Celtic and Gallo-Roman times, and today this appellation is prized for producing some of Burgundy’s most elegant, finely etched whites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Saint-Romain shows a pale lemon hue with green reflections, underlining its freshness and youth. The bouquet is vivid and precise, opening with notes of lemon zest and lime blossom, followed by hints of white flowers, crushed shells and a subtle chalky edge.
On the palate, the wine is lively and mineral-driven, with citrus fruit at the core—think lemon, grapefruit and a touch of green apple—wrapped in a fine, almost saline tension. The chalky texture mentioned in the estate notes lends a delicate, powdery grip and lengthens the finish, while a measured use of oak (if any) stays discreetly in the background, letting the terroir speak. Enjoyable now for its purity and energy, it should develop additional nuance—hazelnut, honeyed citrus and more complex floral tones—over the next 4–6 years.
Production
Saint-Romain’s vineyards sit among the highest in the Côte de Beaune, around 400 metres above sea level, facing the limestone cliffs and the cooler air currents of the Hautes Côtes. The vines for this cuvée are rooted in a mix of brown limestone and deep chalky subsoils that force them to dig deep, naturally limiting yields and extending the ripening season, which often finishes late. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to preserve fruit integrity, then gently pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled conditions, with maturation in stainless steel and/or French oak barrels to balance freshness and texture while showcasing the appellation’s signature minerality.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Romain is a natural partner for refined yet uncomplicated dishes: try it with leek gratin in béchamel sauce, pan-fried or poached trout, or fresh and lightly aged goat’s cheese, all of which complement its citrus brightness and chalky backbone. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the floral and mineral notes to unfurl. A short decant of 15–20 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, will help the wine open up and show additional aromatic complexity.
Producer
The Leflaive name is one of the most respected in Burgundy, and Olivier Leflaive has built a distinguished reputation as both grower and meticulous négociant since founding his own house in 1984 with his brother Patrick, guided behind the scenes by their uncle Vincent of Domaine Leflaive. Over the years, Olivier Leflaive has expanded with carefully chosen vineyard holdings—now around twelve hectares across eight appellations—while cultivating long-term relationships with top growers in the Côte de Beaune. Known for precise, terroir-focused whites that respect each climat’s individuality, the estate is considered a benchmark for elegant, classically styled Chardonnay from Burgundy’s most celebrated villages.
