Description
The 2022 Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso is a refined expression of the Tuscan coast, offering the pedigree of one of Bolgheri’s most respected estates in an immediately approachable style. Blending classic Bordeaux varieties with a touch of Syrah, it captures the region’s sun-drenched ripeness while remaining fresh, poised and food-friendly. This cuvée has become a benchmark for modern Bolgheri, showcasing how elegance and drinkability can sit comfortably alongside depth and complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Bolgheri Rosso shows a vibrant, deep ruby color with youthful violet highlights. The nose opens with ripe red and black fruits—think cherry, plum and blackberry—layered with notes of dried Mediterranean herbs, graphite, violets and a gentle spice from oak aging.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with polished tannins and a lively, coastal freshness that keeps the wine energetic and precise. Juicy red currant, black cherry and dark berry flavors are intertwined with hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf, licorice and a subtle savory edge typical of Bolgheri’s maritime terroir. The finish is long, clean and finely balanced between fruit, acidity and structure. While crafted to be enjoyable upon release, the 2022 has the concentration and structure to develop additional complexity over the next 6–8 years.
Production
Sourced from Le Macchiole’s estate vineyards in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, this wine reflects a terroir of well-drained sandy and clay-limestone soils, moderated by sea breezes that preserve freshness and aromatics. The blend typically includes Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Syrah, all harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, to ensure precision and purity of fruit. Fermentations generally take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve vibrant aromatics, followed by maturation in a combination of barriques and larger oak vessels, allowing the varieties to knit together and gain texture without overwhelming the wine’s natural elegance and coastal character.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Bolgheri Rosso is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with Tuscan-inspired dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops, ragù-based pastas, roasted pork, or richer poultry dishes like duck or guinea fowl. It also complements aged cheeses and charcuterie, especially cured meats with herbal or peppery notes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. A short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up its bouquet and soften the tannins, though it is already very approachable straight from the bottle.
Producer
Le Macchiole, founded in the early 1980s by Eugenio and Cinzia Campolmi, is one of Bolgheri’s pioneering estates and a key name behind the region’s rise to international acclaim. Known for meticulous vineyard work, low yields and a strong commitment to expressing individual sites and varieties, the winery helped define a more refined, terroir-driven style of Super Tuscan wine. Over the years, Le Macchiole has earned a reputation for benchmark bottlings such as Paleo, Messorio and Scrio, regularly receiving high critical praise and cementing its status as a leading producer on the Tuscan coast. The Bolgheri Rosso represents their more accessible, earlier-drinking expression, while still reflecting the same care and precision that define the estate’s top wines.
