Description
2022 Labeja Riesling trocken from Saltaren Wines is a terroir-driven Rheingau white that combines ripe fruit, fine mineral tension, and a modern low-intervention style. Sourced from the Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus site near the Rhine, it reflects both the region’s classic Riesling character and Alex Saltaren Castro’s biodiverse, natural approach to winemaking.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, the wine shows a bright, lively sheen that hints at its fresh, fruit-forward style. The nose opens with peach, ripe pear, citrus zest, and subtle herbal notes, supported by a clear mineral edge.
On the palate it is juicy and structured, with good accessibility and a refined, saline grip that gives the wine shape. A touch of lees texture adds softness and weight, while the finish is balanced, long, and carried by ripe fruit and a precise mineral line. It is well suited to drinking now, but can also develop added complexity over the next few years.
Production
The grapes come from the Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus vineyard in the Rheingau, where calcareous loess-loam soils contribute salinity, finesse, and a well-balanced structure. In the warm and dry 2022 vintage, these water-retentive soils helped maintain freshness and balance in the fruit. Harvested with a careful, natural-minded approach, the grapes are partly de-stemmed and given a short skin contact before gentle pressing.
Fermentation takes place spontaneously, followed by aging in stainless steel and 220-liter wooden casks with 10–12 months on fine lees. The wine is bottled unfiltered in a low-intervention style, preserving clarity of site and a vivid, authentic expression of Riesling.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is highly versatile and works beautifully with sushi and sashimi, grilled zander with lemon butter, poultry dishes with herbs, and vegetarian plates featuring fennel or citrus. It is also a natural match for goat cheese. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short aeration can be helpful if you want to open up the wine’s texture and aromatics.
Producer
Saltaren Wines is the project of Alex Saltaren Castro, who works with a biodiverse, nature-respectful philosophy that is clearly reflected in the Labeja range. While the producer is relatively modern in style, the wines are deeply rooted in the Rheingau’s long Riesling tradition and its prized vineyard sites. The name ‘Labeja’—Spanish for ‘bee’—highlights the focus on biodiversity and a close relationship with the land.
