Description

The 2022 Francis Ford Coppola Zinfandel Diamond Collection captures the bold, sun-drenched character of California Zinfandel in a polished, modern style. Sourced from a blend of warm and cooler-climate vineyards, this wine balances generous, jammy fruit with vibrant spice and supple structure. It’s a crowd-pleasing red that still speaks clearly of its origins and the Coppola family’s long commitment to making wines meant to be shared at the table. The unique selling point of this Zinfandel lies in its careful vineyard selection and thoughtful use of French oak, which lends refinement and a subtle vanilla note rather than heavy sweetness. Old vines from Amador County contribute depth and concentration, while fruit from Paso Robles and Sonoma adds freshness, lift, and complexity; a small addition of Syrah (and a touch of Petit Sirah) rounds out the palate with richer dark fruit and extra juiciness. Zinfandel has long been considered California’s “heritage” grape, with its genetic roots in Southern Italy (where it’s known as Primitivo), and this Diamond Collection bottling is a contemporary expression of that proud legacy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Diamond Collection Zinfandel shows a deep ruby to garnet hue with a vivid, almost inky core and bright, purple-tinged rims. It’s visually generous and inviting, hinting at the intensity within. The nose opens with a warm, enveloping bouquet of ripe raspberry and black cherry, joined by red currant, kirsch, and hints of sun‑warmed strawberry jam. Layers of sweet baking spice, vanilla and subtle cocoa from French oak mingle with notes of black pepper, paprika, and a whisper of dried herbs, recalling rosemary and thyme. On the palate, this is a plush, full-bodied Zinfandel with a soft, welcoming entry that quickly fans out into rich, almost marmalade-like red and black fruits. Ripe raspberry, cherry, and plum are wrapped in creamy textures, with undertones of pepper, licorice, and a gentle, savory spice that keeps the wine from feeling overly sweet. The small Syrah and Petit Sirah component adds darker berries, a touch of blueberry compote, and extra mid-palate weight. Tannins are smooth and polished—present but velvety—leading to a lingering, slightly spicy finish with hints of vanilla and toasted oak. Enjoyable now for its youthful intensity, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years, gaining more integrated spice and secondary complexity.

Production
The fruit for this 2022 Zinfandel Diamond Collection is drawn from a mosaic of classic California Zinfandel terroirs: the old, low-yielding vines of Amador County in the warmer Sierra Foothills, the dry, sun-baked yet low-rainfall sites of Paso Robles, and the somewhat cooler, more temperate vineyards of Sonoma. This mix of climates and soils provides both concentration and freshness—Amador contributes power and density, Paso Robles brings richness and depth thanks to its warm days and cool nights, while Sonoma offers balance and aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness to capture intense fruit character without sacrificing natural acidity, followed by careful sorting to ensure only the healthiest bunches make it into the fermenters. After a temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve vibrant aromatics and extract color and flavor gently, the wine is matured for around fourteen months in barriques made exclusively from French oak. This deliberate choice of French, rather than American, oak imparts a more subtle, elegant spice profile and refined vanilla tones that support, rather than dominate, the expressive Zinfandel fruit.

Food & Serving
This Zinfandel is tailor-made for hearty, flavorful dishes and anything off the grill. It pairs beautifully with pepper-crusted steak, grilled lamb with rosemary, and richly sauced pastas, especially those built around sun-dried tomatoes, roasted peppers, or spicy sausage. It’s also a natural partner for barbecue ribs, burgers, grilled vegetables, and robust, tomato-based comfort foods. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and spice; if served too warm, the alcohol and sweetness can overshadow its balance. While decanting is not essential, giving the wine 20–30 minutes in a carafe or simply opening the bottle a bit ahead of time will help the aromatic complexity and smooth tannins fully emerge.

Producer
Francis Ford Coppola Winery is the vision of legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, whose family roots in winemaking stretch back generations. Long before he became synonymous with The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now, wine was an integral part of his family’s life—his grandfather famously made wine in the basement of their New York apartment from grapes shipped in from California. In the mid-1970s, Coppola and his wife purchased the historic Inglenook estate in Rutherford, Napa Valley, and later expanded their footprint with Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Sonoma, dedicated to crafting approachable, characterful wines for everyday enjoyment. Today, the winery is a major presence in the California wine landscape, known for combining cinematic storytelling with serious vineyard and cellar work. The parent company was named USA “Wine Producer of the Year” by the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2011, underscoring the estate’s commitment to quality and its influential role in shaping modern American wine culture.
