Description
The 2022 Dalsheim Bürgel Spätburgunder VDP.Grosses Gewächs trocken from Weingut Keller is a finely built, site-driven Pinot Noir from one of Rheinhessen’s most respected Grand Cru vineyards. Sourced from the limestone-rich Dalsheimer Bürgel, it combines cool-climate elegance with remarkable precision and depth, reflecting both the vineyard’s chalky character and Keller’s uncompromising approach to quality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a refined, translucent Pinot Noir profile with poised red fruit and a polished, elegant presence. The nose opens with cherry, raspberry, and red berry aromas, layered with floral nuances, subtle spice, and a distinct stony, chalk-driven minerality.
The palate is silky yet focused, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity, and a cool-fruited core that keeps the wine fresh and energetic. Delicate oak supports the structure without overtaking the fruit, while the finish is long, saline, and precise. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, and it should gain even more complexity over the next 8–15 years.
Production
The Bürgel vineyard in Dalsheim is among the cooler and most limestone-rich top sites in Rheinhessen, giving the wine its sense of tension, minerality, and finesse. The grapes are hand-harvested with strict selection, then spontaneously fermented in wood with gentle extraction to preserve elegance and structure.
The wine is matured for 18–24 months in French barriques, with a carefully measured amount of new oak. This élevage adds texture, depth, and complexity while allowing the purity of the fruit and the vineyard’s mineral signature to remain front and center.
Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as veal, lamb, duck, or poultry, as well as mushroom-based plates, truffle dishes, and mature cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if drinking young to allow the aromas to open fully.
