Description

The 2022 Château de la Gardine Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is a rich, sun-soaked expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most iconic appellations. Crafted from the classic southern Rhône varieties, it combines depth and concentration with a surprising freshness that makes it immediately appealing yet built to evolve. This cuvée captures the heritage of Château de la Gardine, a long-established family estate renowned for its powerful yet polished Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château de la Gardine Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge shows a deep ruby color with violet hues at the rim, hinting at its youth and intensity. The nose is generous and inviting, with layers of ripe black cherry, sun-warmed raspberry, and plum, supported by notes of garrigue (thyme, rosemary, and lavender), licorice, and a touch of black pepper and cocoa from aging. Subtle hints of dried herbs and a whiff of smoked meat add complexity as it opens. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, structured red with supple tannins and a core of sweet red and black fruit. Flavors of kirsch, blackberry compote, and dark cherry are framed by notes of spice, dried Mediterranean herbs, and a gentle savory edge. The texture is generous but not heavy, with enough freshness to keep it lifted and balanced. The finish is long and warming, with lingering spice and fruit. Enjoyable now after a brief decant, it has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining more leather, truffle, and gamey nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Château de la Gardine’s vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape benefit from classic southern Rhône terroir: sun-drenched slopes, large rounded galets roulés (river stones) that store and radiate heat, and well-draining clay- and sand-based soils that limit vigor and favor concentration. Old-vine Grenache typically forms the backbone of the blend, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and other permitted local varieties to add color, structure, and spicy complexity. Harvesting is generally done by hand, allowing for careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes in the vineyard. In the cellar, the fruit is destemmed or partially destemmed depending on the parcel, followed by a temperature-controlled fermentation to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins while preserving freshness. The wine is then matured in a combination of large traditional foudres and oak barrels, striking a balance between preserving fruit purity and adding subtle spice and texture before bottling.

Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is a natural partner for hearty, flavor-packed dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, duck, venison, grilled beef, and rich stews such as boeuf daube or cassoulet. Mediterranean-inspired cuisine—think herb-crusted lamb, ratatouille, game birds with olives, or aged hard cheeses—also brings out its savory, herbal side. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–65°F) to highlight its complexity without emphasizing alcohol. For best results, decant 1–2 hours before serving in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the aromatics to fully unfold; older bottles will require a shorter, gentler decanting to preserve their more delicate tertiary notes.
