Description
2021 Goldlack Riesling trocken from Schloss Johannisberg is a distinguished single-vineyard Riesling from one of the most iconic estates in the Rheingau. Sourced from a prized parcel in the Langenberg and crafted in a deeply traditional style, it combines precision, power, and refined mineral character. With roots in the legendary Schloss Johannisberg—the birthplace of Riesling as a fine wine since 1720—this is a wine with both historical weight and remarkable stature.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, luminous straw color. The nose is strikingly flinty and layered, with notes of firestone, citrus zest, and ripe apricot, lifted by subtle smoky nuances from élevage in oak.
The palate is dense yet beautifully composed, balancing tension and elegance with salty minerality, fine spice, and a creamy mid-palate texture. Its vibrant, finely etched acidity drives the wine long and precise, while the finish is saline, noble, and persistent. This is a Riesling built for aging, with excellent cellaring potential over many years.
Production
The grapes come from the south-facing quartzite slopes of Schloss Johannisberg, where iron-rich loess and clay contribute to the wine’s mineral depth and structural finesse. The fruit is harvested by hand from the select parcel known as "Mäuerchen quer" in the Langenberg, a highly prized section of the site.
After a 48-hour skin contact period, fermentation takes place spontaneously in 1,200-liter traditional oak casks made from estate wood. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for 24 months on the full lees in the historic Bibliotheca Subterranea before being bottled in spring 2024.
Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for turbot with shellfish jus, veal loin with morels, or Asian-spiced pork belly. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté. Serve chilled at around 10-12°C, and decanting is recommended if you want the wine to open up more quickly, especially in its youth.
Producer
Schloss Johannisberg is one of the most storied names in German wine, with a legacy stretching back centuries and an especially important place in Riesling history. As the estate widely regarded as the birthplace of Riesling-focused winemaking since 1720, it has helped define the style and reputation of the Rheingau. Today, it remains a benchmark producer for structured, age-worthy Rieslings of exceptional finesse and character.
