The 2021 Georges Vernay Côte-Rôtie Blonde du Seigneur is a refined expression of Northern Rhône Syrah, combining the appellation’s characteristic power with remarkable floral elegance. Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to purple in appearance, the wine opens with lifted aromas of violet, blackberry, black cherry and blueberry, followed by notes of pepper, smoked meat, graphite and subtle spices. On the palate, it is concentrated yet graceful, with finely structured tannins, bright acidity and a distinctly mineral finish. The 2021 vintage brings freshness and precision, allowing the fruit and floral character of the Syrah to shine. It can be enjoyed after some time in the bottle, but should develop further complexity over the next 8–15 years with careful cellaring.

Production
The vineyards of Côte-Rôtie are planted on exceptionally steep, terraced slopes overlooking the Rhône, where poor schist and granite-based soils encourage deep-rooted, low-yielding vines. Syrah benefits from the region’s warm south-facing exposures while retaining freshness from the northern Rhône climate. Georges Vernay is known for careful vineyard work and traditional, quality-focused winemaking, with the grapes gently fermented before maturation in oak to add texture and complexity without obscuring the wine’s floral and mineral character.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the wine to come gradually to serving temperature. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended when opening the bottle young, particularly to soften the tannins and reveal its aromatic depth. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, venison, beef fillet, duck, game birds and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Hard, mature cheeses also make an excellent match.

Founded by Francis Vernay and later developed by his daughter Christine, the estate played a major role in restoring the reputation of the appellation and in preserving its steep, difficult-to-work vineyards.
