Abadía Retuerta Selección Especial 2021 is a refined, full-bodied red from one of Spain’s most distinctive historic estates. Crafted from a carefully selected blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot, it combines the depth of Castilla y León with polished oak integration and impressive freshness. The wine is made at a former 12th-century abbey, adding a remarkable sense of place and history to this modern Spanish classic.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in colour, the wine opens with expressive aromas of ripe blackberries, black plum and dark cherries, followed by notes of violet, spice, cedar and subtle toasted oak. On the palate, it is generous and layered, with concentrated dark fruit, supple tannins and a lively mineral freshness. Hints of cocoa, liquorice and warm spices develop through the finish, which is long, balanced and persistent. With its structure and concentration, the 2021 Selección Especial is enjoyable now after a little aeration, while further bottle ageing should allow the tannins to soften and the savoury, tertiary notes to emerge. It can develop gracefully over the next several years when stored in suitable conditions.

Production
The vineyards lie around Sardón de Duero in Castilla y León, on elevated, continental terrain with pronounced day-to-night temperature variation. The estate’s varied soils and individual vineyard plots contribute complexity to the final blend. Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified separately according to variety and parcel, before the selected lots are blended and matured in oak, allowing the fruit, spice and structure to integrate harmoniously.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after decanting for 30–60 minutes to open the wine and soften its youthful structure. Its rich yet balanced profile makes it a natural match for roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, Iberian pork, game, hearty stews and mature hard cheeses. It also works beautifully with classic Spanish dishes such as slow-cooked meats and mushroom-based preparations.

Abadía Retuerta is based at the historic Santa María de Retuerta abbey, founded in the 12th century near the Duero River. The estate combines its monastic heritage with meticulous, plot-focused winemaking and has become one of the leading names in Castilla y León, producing wines known for their precision, depth and ageing ability. Although located in Sardón de Duero rather than within the Ribera del Duero appellation, its distinctive terroir and ambitious approach have earned the estate considerable international recognition.
