Description
The 2020 Sonnenberg KT (Kostert) Spätburgunder VDP.Grosses Gewächs from Weingut Jülg is a refined, site-driven Pinot Noir from one of the Pfalz’s most distinguished vineyards. Grown on limestone-rich soils and crafted in a style that balances German precision with Burgundian finesse, it reflects both place and pedigree. As a VDP.GG bottling, it stands at the top of the region’s dry wine hierarchy and showcases the best of South Palatinate Spätburgunder.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the depth and elegance typical of serious Pinot Noir, with a polished, focused profile. The nose is marked by dark cherry, blueberry, and plum, lifted by violet notes and a subtle spicy edge.
On the palate, the wine is concentrated yet taut, with fine-grained tannins, a chalky mineral core, and vibrant acidity that gives it energy and length. Its structure and balance point to excellent aging potential, with the wine likely to gain even more complexity over the coming years.
Production
The grapes come from the Kostert parcel in the Schweigener Sonnenberg, a prized site in southern Pfalz known for its south-facing exposure, protected microclimate, and calcareous soils with clay and marl. Fruit was selectively harvested by hand, then spontaneously fermented in wooden cuves, with gentle pigeage to build texture and tannin. The wine matured for 18 months in barriques and was bottled unfiltered to preserve authenticity and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is an excellent match for game, lamb, veal roast, and dishes with earthy depth such as mushroom risotto or truffle pasta. It also works beautifully with mature cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about an hour is recommended if drinking young to help the wine खुल out and show its full aromatic range.
Producer
Weingut Jülg is a highly regarded family estate in the Pfalz, known for producing precise, terroir-focused wines with a clear Burgundian influence. The winery has built a strong reputation for top-level Pinot Noir, particularly from premium vineyard sites in the southern Palatinate. Its VDP.Grosses Gewächs bottlings are among the most respected expressions of the region’s potential for world-class Spätburgunder.
