2020 Paterico Taurasi Riserva Gian Luca Mazzella is a serious, terroir-driven red from one of southern Italy’s most prestigious appellations. Made in the volcanic hills of Irpinia, it showcases the deep structure, mineral edge, and long aging potential that have made Taurasi—and Aglianico in particular—so highly regarded among collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riserva shows a deep, concentrated color that hints at its power and concentration. The nose unfolds gradually with black cherry, plum, and wild berries, layered with tobacco, licorice, dark chocolate, Mediterranean herbs, and, with air, notes of leather, smoke, graphite, and balsamic spice. On the palate it is full-bodied, precise, and firmly structured, with ripe tannins, vibrant acidity, and a distinctly volcanic mineral character. The finish is long, spicy, and complex, and the wine has the potential to develop beautifully for many years, gaining further nuance and finesse with bottle age.

Production
The wine comes from Taurasi in Campania, where vineyards in the rolling Irpinian landscape benefit from volcanic, limestone, and clay-rich soils that lend depth and mineral complexity. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal phenolic ripeness, then undergo temperature-controlled fermentation followed by an extended maceration to build structure and aromatic depth. Aging takes place over several years in French oak casks and bottle, giving the Riserva its harmony and impressive development potential.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for braised beef, game, lamb, and ossobuco, as well as mature pecorino, truffle dishes, and robust Italian cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young, to allow the wine’s layered aromas and structure to open fully.
