Description
The 2020 G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole BIO is a single-cru Barolo from one of the highest and most revered vineyards in La Morra. Crafted from organically grown Nebbiolo, it captures Barolo’s classic structure with the lifted aromatics and finesse that Bricco delle Viole is famous for. This bottling is a benchmark expression of the cru, blending tradition, purity, and a remarkable sense of place in one of Piedmont’s great vintages.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bricco delle Viole shows a luminous, garnet-red hue with brilliant transparency at the rim, typical of refined Nebbiolo. The nose is intensely perfumed and layered: rose petals, violet, red cherry, and wild strawberry unfold first, followed by blood orange zest, anise, dried herbs, and a subtle mineral edge.
On the palate, the wine is precise and elegant rather than heavy, with finely etched tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of sour cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, and cranberry are interwoven with hints of licorice, fennel seed, crushed roses, and a gentle, savory spice. The finish is long, persistent, and delicately saline, showing a beautiful balance between fruit, florality, and structure. While already accessible with air in its youth, this Barolo has the backbone to develop tertiary notes of truffle, dried flowers, and leather over 10–20 years and beyond, rewarding patient cellaring.
Production
Bricco delle Viole is one of La Morra’s highest and coolest crus, with vineyards planted on predominantly calcareous, marl-limestone soils that lend tension, fragrance, and precision to Nebbiolo. G.D. Vajra farms this site organically (BIO), emphasizing biodiversity, low yields, and careful canopy management to ensure slow, even ripening. Grapes are harvested by hand, usually later than many neighboring sites due to the altitude and exposure, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, followed by an extended maceration to gently extract tannin and aroma. The wine is then aged in large, neutral Slavonian and/or Slovenian oak casks for several years, allowing the character of the vineyard and vintage to shine without overt oak influence before bottling with minimal intervention.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural match for classic Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin with ragù, brasato al Barolo (wine-braised beef), and veal or beef stews, as well as truffle-based dishes, mushroom risottos, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and balance. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; older bottles should be decanted more gently, or simply poured carefully, to preserve their evolved aromas.
Producer
G.D. Vajra is a family-run estate based in Vergne, in the commune of Barolo, and is widely regarded as one of the most thoughtful and terroir-focused producers in Piedmont. Founded in the 1970s by Aldo Vajra, the winery was an early proponent of sustainable and organic farming in the region, long before it became commonplace. Today, the Vajra family cultivates some of Barolo’s most prized sites, including Bricco delle Viole, and is celebrated for producing wines that combine classical structure with purity, precision, and lifted aromatics. Their Baroli are frequently featured in top international wine publications and are considered reference points for the elegance and ageworthiness that the Barolo appellation can achieve.
