Description

2020 Famille Perrin Gigondas Domaine du Clos des Tourelles is one of the flagship bottlings from the southern Rhône, crafted from old vines within a historic walled vineyard in the heart of Gigondas. Produced in tiny quantities and only in the best vintages, it marries the wild, sun-drenched character of the appellation with the precision and finesse for which the Perrin family is renowned. Each bottle is individually numbered, underlining its limited, collectible nature and its status as one of the top red wines from Gigondas.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Gigondas shows a deep, dark ruby-red colour with a vibrant rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with wild strawberries and ripe cherries, followed by notes of black licorice, tobacco leaf and the region’s signature garrigue – a bouquet of dried Provençal herbs, thyme and rosemary. On the palate, the wine is richly textured yet beautifully balanced, offering flavors of candied red berries, cherry compote and lavender, wrapped in a velvety, mouthfilling structure. The tannins are ripe and finely grained, providing length and backbone without ever feeling harsh. Hints of spice and dried herbs carry through to a long, intense finish. This 2020 vintage is already seductive in its youth, but has the structure and concentration to develop additional complexity in bottle over the next 8–12 years, and likely longer in ideal cellaring conditions.

Production
Domaine du Clos des Tourelles sits on prime Gigondas terroir, where sun-drenched slopes, stony soils and the cooling influence of the nearby Dentelles de Montmirail create ideal conditions for Grenache and its Rhône companions. The vineyards are farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles, with careful manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are brought to the cellar. The grapes are picked by hand, left in whole clusters (not destemmed), gently crushed, then fermented with natural, indigenous yeasts in large temperature-controlled concrete vats. After pressing, the young wine is transferred to barriques for malolactic fermentation and 15 months of ageing. It is then blended and bottled without filtration, preserving maximum texture, aromatic detail and a true sense of place.

Food & Serving
This Gigondas is an excellent partner for robust, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, grilled ribeye steak, duck breast with cherry or berry sauces, and slow-braised beef or venison stews. It also pairs beautifully with Mediterranean-inspired cuisine featuring tapenade, roasted vegetables, and dishes seasoned with thyme, sage or lavender. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving will help the wine unfold its full aromatic complexity and soften the young tannins, especially in its first several years after release.

Producer
Say “Perrin” and most wine lovers immediately think of Château de Beaucastel, one of the great historic estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a benchmark for Rhône wines worldwide. Although the property dates back to the early 17th century, it was the Perrin family, taking over in 1909, who transformed it into a modern icon and later built an impressive Rhône empire. Now in its fifth generation, Famille Perrin oversees around 325 hectares of vineyards – mostly owned – across the southern Rhône, from Châteauneuf-du-Pape to key appellations like Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Vinsobres, Cairanne, Rasteau and even Tavel and Côtes de Provence (with the high-profile Miraval project in partnership with Jolie-Pitt). Pioneers of organic and biodynamic viticulture since the 1960s, the Perrins have long championed natural vineyard work and meticulous, terroir-driven winemaking. They are also celebrated as master blenders, using their deep understanding of each grape and parcel to craft wines of precision, balance and authenticity. Under the Famille Perrin label, Domaine du Clos des Tourelles stands as one of their crown jewels in Gigondas, showcasing the best of this rugged, characterful appellation.
