The 2019 Paterico Taurasi Riserva from Gian Luca Mazzella is a serious expression of Taurasi, one of southern Italy’s most celebrated red-wine appellations. Made in Campania from Aglianico grown on volcanic, limestone-rich, and clay soils, it combines power, mineral depth, and the kind of structure that has earned Taurasi the nickname “the Barolo of the South.”

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, the wine opens with intense aromas of black cherry, plum, and dark berries, layered with tobacco, licorice, leather, and Mediterranean herbs. With time in the glass, more nuanced notes of graphite, smoke, balsamic tones, and dark chocolate emerge. On the palate it is full-bodied, precise, and deeply structured, with ripe tannins, vibrant acidity, and a distinctly volcanic mineral character. The finish is long, spicy, and complex, and the wine has the concentration and balance to age gracefully for many years, likely developing further complexity over decades.

Production
This Taurasi Riserva comes from hillside vineyards in Irpinia, where the combination of volcanic, calcareous, and clay soils gives Aglianico its hallmark intensity, freshness, and longevity. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected before undergoing a long maceration, followed by extended maturation in French oak and bottle to build depth, harmony, and complexity.

Food & Serving
Excellent with game, braised beef, lamb, and ossobuco, as well as truffle dishes, aged pecorino, and richly flavored Italian cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours to let the wine fully open and soften its tannins.
