Description
The 2019 Hahn Estate SLH Chardonnay showcases the cool-climate character of Monterey County’s famed Santa Lucia Highlands in a generous, polished style. Sourced from Hahn’s estate vineyards, this Chardonnay balances ripe California fruit with refreshing coastal freshness, making it both crowd-pleasing and distinctly place-driven. The SLH designation underscores the wine’s pedigree from one of California’s most respected Chardonnay regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Hahn Estate SLH Chardonnay shines a bright straw to pale gold, with inviting clarity and a subtle, viscous sheen. The nose opens with ripe orchard fruits—think yellow apple and pear—layered with lemon curd, ripe peach, and a hint of pineapple, supported by notes of vanilla, toasted brioche, and a touch of baking spice from oak.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a creamy texture that’s lifted by vibrant acidity, reflecting the cool coastal influence of Monterey County. Flavors of baked apple, stone fruit, and Meyer lemon are interwoven with nuances of custard, hazelnut, and a gentle oak toast. The finish is long and focused, with a lingering citrus brightness and a subtle mineral edge. Enjoy it now for its youthful vitality, or cellar for 3–5 years to allow the fruit and oak to knit even more harmoniously.
Production
This Chardonnay is sourced from estate vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands, a subregion of Monterey County known for its elevated slopes, well-drained soils, and strong afternoon winds blowing in from the cool Monterey Bay. The combination of sunny days, cold nights, and marine influence allows for slow, even ripening and excellent flavor development while maintaining acidity. Grapes are typically harvested in the cool of the night to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. In the cellar, the wine is fermented primarily in oak barrels, with a portion possibly undergoing malolactic fermentation to build texture and complexity. Aging on the lees, with occasional stirring, contributes to the wine’s layered mouthfeel, subtle creaminess, and integrated oak profile.
Food & Serving
The 2019 Hahn Estate SLH Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with dishes like roast chicken, seared scallops, lobster with drawn butter, or richer fish preparations such as salmon in a lemon-butter sauce. It also complements creamy pasta dishes, roast turkey, and mild, creamy cheeses such as Brie or Camembert. Serve slightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both its freshness and texture. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving or giving it a quick splash in a decanter can help the aromas fully express themselves.
Producer
Hahn is a family-owned winery that has become one of the benchmark producers in Monterey County, with a particular focus on showcasing the distinct character of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Established in the 1980s by Nicky and Gaby Hahn, the estate was instrumental in bringing attention to the region’s potential for world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and Hahn was among the early advocates behind the formal recognition of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Today, Hahn’s estate vineyards and meticulous viticulture are widely respected, and the winery is known for delivering high quality and a strong sense of place across its range of wines, with the SLH bottlings standing as some of the purest expressions of this cool-climate coastal terroir.
