Description

The 2018 Lorch Kapellenberg Spätburgunder trocken from Chat Sauvage is a Burgundy-inspired Pinot Noir from one of the Rheingau’s most distinctive sites. Sourced from the historic Lorch Kapellenberg vineyard, it combines mineral precision, depth, and elegance with the regional character of a true Lagenwein.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätburgunder shows a refined, polished profile with ripe cherry and plum at the forefront. The nose is lifted by fine mineral spice, while the palate delivers a powerful yet graceful structure, with fine-grained tannins and a beautifully balanced acidity. Its schist, quartzite, and loess-clay origins bring both warmth and tension, resulting in a wine with impressive length and inner energy. The 2018 vintage adds ripe fruit concentration, and the wine should age gracefully over the coming years, gaining complexity and nuance.

Production
The grapes come from Lorch Kapellenberg, a historic Rheingau site linked to a 14th-century chapel and known for its excellent Pinot Noir potential. The vineyard’s mix of slate, quartzite, and loess-clay soils gives the wine its depth, mineral drive, and subtle warmth. The fruit was selectively hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented, aged for around two years in French barrique, and bottled with minimal filtration to preserve purity and texture.

Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for wild game, lamb, veal cheeks, or mushroom-based dishes, especially those with earthy elements such as truffle. It also pairs well with mature cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended to allow the wine to open and show its full aromatic complexity.

Producer
Chat Sauvage is a Rheingau producer known for crafting Pinot Noir in a style inspired by Burgundy, with a strong focus on precision, structure, and terroir expression. The estate has earned recognition for producing serious, elegant Spätburgunder that stands out in a region better known for Riesling, helping to raise the profile of Pinot Noir in Germany’s top wine regions.
