Description
The 2017 Nieder-Flörsheim Frauenberg Riesling VDP.Grosses Gewächs from Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier is a site-driven Riesling from one of Rheinhessen’s most respected grand cru vineyards. Grown on limestone-rich soils and crafted in a precise, terroir-focused style, it combines mineral depth, tension, and elegance in a way that clearly reflects both the vineyard and the producer’s philosophy.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, it opens with a refined bouquet of citrus peel, yellow apple, and fresh herbs, layered with chalky minerality and a subtle spicy edge. On the palate, it is taut and linear yet impressively deep, with vibrant acidity, a saline streak, and a long, powerful finish that feels both structured and graceful.
This is a Riesling built for the cellar, with the balance and concentration to develop beautifully over time. With bottle age, expect the fruit to become more nuanced while the mineral, savory, and textural elements gain even greater complexity.
Production
The grapes come from the VDP.GROSSE LAGE Frauenberg in Nieder-Flörsheim, a limestone-dominated site that brings precision, tension, and distinctive mineral character to the wine. Harvested by hand, the fruit was spontaneously fermented and then matured in large oak casks with extended lees contact, a method that adds texture and depth without masking the vineyard’s personality.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is an excellent match for fish, shellfish, and refined seafood dishes, as well as poultry and creamy preparations that can stand up to its acidity and structure. Serve it well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and consider brief decanting if you want to open up its aromatic complexity in its youth.
Producer
Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier is one of Rheinhessen’s leading estates and is closely associated with biodynamic viticulture and a purist approach to winemaking. Under the guidance of the Spanier family, the estate has earned a strong reputation for site-specific wines, particularly its Rieslings, which are widely regarded for their clarity, precision, and aging potential.
