Description
The 2014 Vieille Vigne du Levant Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut from Larmandier-Bernier is a terroir-driven Champagne from one of the Côte des Blancs’ most prized Grand Cru parcels in Cramant. Made entirely from old-vine Chardonnay and bottled with very low dosage, it captures the purity, tension, and mineral elegance that have made Larmandier-Bernier one of Champagne’s benchmark biodynamic producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Champagne shows a pale golden colour with a fine, energetic mousse. The nose is bright and layered, offering citrus zest, white peach, fresh almond, brioche, and a distinct chalky note that speaks clearly of its Cramant origins.
The palate is precise and structured, with vivid acidity, a subtle creamy texture, and a salty, mineral drive that carries the wine through a long, cool finish. It has the balance and depth to age gracefully, and should continue to develop added complexity over the next several years.
Production
The wine comes from an old parcel in Cramant Grand Cru on the Côte des Blancs, where Chardonnay vines over 50 years old are rooted in pure chalk soils. The grapes are hand-harvested and gently pressed, then fermented with native yeasts in large oak casks to build texture and complexity. After secondary fermentation in bottle, the wine spends several years on the lees before being released as Extra Brut, allowing the character of the vineyard to remain front and centre.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is an excellent match for scallops, lobster, turbot, roast poultry with morels, veal fillet, or mature Comté. Serve chilled at 9–11°C, and give it a little air before pouring if possible; decanting is not usually necessary, but a short opening can help the wine show its full aromatic detail.
Producer
Larmandier-Bernier is a highly respected grower-producer based in Champagne, widely known for its biodynamic approach and expressive, site-specific wines. The house has earned an outstanding reputation for producing some of the region’s most precise and mineral Chardonnay-based Champagnes, with particular acclaim for its Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs.
