Description
The 2005 Vieille Vigne du Levant Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut is a striking single-parcel Champagne from one of the Côte des Blancs’ most respected Grand Cru sites. Made entirely from old-vine Chardonnay and crafted in a low-dosage style, it captures the purity, chalky precision, and depth that have made Larmandier-Bernier a benchmark for terroir-driven Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a pale golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose is layered and mature, with ripe citrus, dried apple, almond, brioche, honey, and subtle toasty notes, all wrapped in a distinctive chalky freshness.
The palate is complex, focused, and beautifully textured, balancing generous maturity with vibrant acidity and a saline, mineral core. The finish is long, precise, and mouthwatering, with excellent aging potential already on display and the structure to continue evolving gracefully over time.
Production
Vieille Vigne du Levant comes from an old parcel in Cramant Grand Cru on the Côte des Blancs, where more than 50-year-old Chardonnay vines grow in pure chalk soils. The site’s exposure and the deep root systems of these old vines contribute to the wine’s concentration, finesse, and marked mineral character.
The grapes are hand-harvested and gently pressed before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large oak casks. The wine then undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle and matures for many years on the lees, building complexity and texture. Bottled Extra Brut, it retains very low dosage to preserve the clarity of the vineyard expression.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is a superb match for lobster, pan-seared scallops, turbot, poultry with morels, veal loin, or aged Comté. Serve at 10–12°C and, if possible, give it a little air before pouring to allow the aromas to fully open. Decanting is not essential, but a brief aeration can be beneficial for this mature cuvée.
