Description
Graham’s is one of the great historic names in Porto, and this 2000 Vintage Port shows exactly why the house is so highly regarded. Rich, structured and built for the long haul, it combines the power of the Douro with the elegance and precision that have made Graham’s a benchmark for vintage port for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it pours a deep purple-garnet, already beginning to show the first signs of maturity at the rim. The nose is generous and layered, offering blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum alongside cocoa, baking spice and a floral hint of violet.
The palate is full-bodied and opulent, with dense dark fruit wrapped around ripe, polished tannins. A balanced sweetness and firm structure keep everything in check, while the finish is long, complex and satisfying. This is a Vintage Port with excellent aging potential, and while it is already expressive, it will continue to evolve beautifully for many years to come.
Production
The grapes come from steep, high-altitude quintas in the Douro Valley, where poor schist soils store heat during the day and help ripen fruit in the region’s hot climate. Harvesting was done by hand, and fermentation took place in traditional granite lagares before fortification with grape spirit preserved the wine’s natural sweetness. The wine was then matured for around two years in wood before bottling, where it can age for decades.
Food & Serving
Serve this Vintage Port at 16–18°C and decant if needed to separate any sediment. It is a classic match for Stilton and other blue cheeses, but also works beautifully with dark chocolate, walnut or hazelnut desserts, or simply as a contemplative glass at the end of a meal.
Producer
Graham’s was founded in 1820 and has long been one of the leading producers in the Douro and Porto trade. Known for its powerful yet polished style, the house owns some of the region’s finest vineyards and has built a strong reputation for outstanding Vintage Ports, particularly in legendary years such as 2000.
