This single-vineyard bottling combines mineral depth, fine fruit and impeccable balance, offering a wine that is both seriously age‑worthy and immediately captivating. In the sun‑drenched 2018 vintage, Berg Roseneck’s cool, stony soils helped retain freshness while allowing the Riesling to reach beautiful ripeness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Berg Roseneck Riesling typically shows a bright, pale lemon hue with green reflections, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose is layered and detailed: expect aromas of mirabelle plum, ripe quince and grated apple, joined by delicate notes of green plum, citrus zest and a subtle beeswax nuance as it opens in the glass. Underneath the fruit lies a clear mineral impression, reminiscent of wet stone and a faint, salty breeze. On the palate, this wine is precise yet generous, with a finely etched, extract‑rich fruit core. Ripe stone fruit and orchard fruit are lifted by a taut, racy acidity, creating a beautifully judged sweet‑sour tension even in this ripe vintage. The finish is long, saline and extremely focused, with a lingering impression of spice and crushed rock that speaks clearly of Berg Roseneck’s steep, stony terrain. While it can be enjoyed now for its purity of fruit and textural charm, this 2018 has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity, honeyed notes and additional depth over time.
Production
Berg Roseneck is a steep, south‑facing slope that sits above the famed Rheingau town of Rüdesheim, nestled between the Berg Schlossberg and Berg Rottland crus. The site’s soils are a mix of stony loam interlaced with slate and quartzite layers, providing excellent drainage and forcing the vines to dig deep, resulting in low yields and intensely mineral fruit. At Weingut Georg Breuer, the Riesling is typically harvested by hand, often in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and impeccable selection of bunches. In the cellar, the must is handled gently and fermented with minimal intervention, often using ambient yeasts in stainless steel and/or large traditional wooden casks, at controlled, relatively cool temperatures. The wine is then left on its fine lees to develop texture, complexity and aromatic finesse before being bottled with a focus on purity and terroir expression rather than overt winemaking signatures.
Food & Serving
This is a highly versatile food wine, ideally suited to refined, aromatic cuisine. Pair it with classic German dishes such as pan‑fried trout with herbs, schnitzel with lemon, or pork loin with light jus, as well as with Asian‑inspired fare like sushi, sashimi, lightly spiced Thai dishes or Vietnamese salads. It also shines alongside shellfish (oysters, scallops, prawns), roasted poultry, veal, and soft to semi‑hard cheeses like young Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 9–11 °C (48–52 °F) to highlight its aromatic precision and mineral backbone. Younger bottles benefit from a brief aperture or a light decant of 20–30 minutes, especially if served cool, to allow the fruit and subtle beeswax and herbal notes to unfold fully.
Producer
Weingut Georg Breuer, based in Rüdesheim am Rhein and founded in the late 19th century, is one of the leading estates of the Rheingau and a standard‑bearer for dry, terroir‑driven Riesling. Under the stewardship of Theresa Breuer, who took over after the untimely passing of her father Bernhard Breuer, the estate has continued to refine its focus on steep, historic single vineyards such as Berg Roseneck, Berg Schlossberg and Berg Rottland. The winery is widely respected for its meticulous vineyard work, low yields and minimal‑intervention philosophy in the cellar, aiming to express each site’s unique personality with clarity and precision. Georg Breuer’s Rieslings consistently earn high praise from international critics and collectors, cementing the estate’s status as a reference point for the Rheingau and for world‑class dry Riesling more broadly.
