Meursault

Meursault is a renowned appellation in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune region, widely regarded for its distinctive and celebrated white wines. Situated just south of Volnay and north of Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault vineyards benefit from an ideal terroir of marl and limestone soils, contributing to the fame of its Chardonnay-based expressions. Unlike some neighboring villages that are prized for their reds, Meursault has built its reputation on crafting some of the world’s most elegant and age-worthy white wines.

The wines of Meursault are primarily made from Chardonnay, though a small amount of Pinot Noir is produced under the appellation for red Meursault, representing only a tiny fraction of output. The whites, however, are noted for their golden color, complex aromas of roasted nuts, honey, butter, and stone fruits, often underpinned by a signature minerality and a remarkable capacity for aging. These characteristics set Meursault apart from other white Burgundies, which tend to be leaner or more overtly floral, and from classic Chardonnay styles outside Burgundy, which might emphasize oak or tropical fruit.

Historically, Meursault’s winemaking roots trace back to medieval times, with records of vineyard cultivation dating as far back as the 11th century. Over centuries, local producers have honed viticultural techniques tailored to the area’s unique soils and microclimate. Unlike the neighboring appellations that boast numerous grand cru vineyards, Meursault is composed mainly of village-level and premier cru sites, yet some of its most celebrated climats, such as Les Perrières, Les Charmes, and Les Genevrières, rival grand cru wines in both quality and acclaim.

Within the Meursault appellation, wines can vary in style according to vineyard location and producer philosophy. Premier cru vineyards generally offer more structure, depth, and aging potential, while village-level bottlings tend to be approachable young, showcasing a creamy texture and vibrant floral and hazelnut notes.

Meursault’s distinguished whites are famously versatile partners at the table. Their rich texture and vibrant acidity make them excellent matches for dishes like roasted poultry, creamy seafood, shellfish, and subtly spiced Asian cuisine. They also complement richer cheeses, particularly hard and aged varieties, and have a well-earned place alongside festive meals and refined pairings.
