It’s a wine of precision and depth, marrying cool-climate freshness with remarkable concentration and mineral drive. For lovers of serious, age‑worthy Sauvignon Blanc, this bottling shows why Neumeister is regarded among Austria’s elite producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Alte Reben shows a pale to medium straw colour with green reflections, hinting at both youth and intensity. The nose is cool and tightly woven at first, opening gradually to aromas of yellow stone fruit, citrus peel and quince, layered with smoke, flint, and subtle notes of fresh herbs, dried flowers and delicate spice. Hints of yeast, white mushroom and a faint, savoury bacon nuance echo the complexity that has made past vintages so highly rated. On the palate the wine is firm, finely chiselled and dry, with a compact core of rather restrained, almost herbal-tinged fruit. Underneath runs a powerful vein of stony, chalky and seashell-like minerality, reminiscent of wet rocks and firestone, wrapped in a cool, linear structure. The acidity is taut but perfectly integrated, supported by plenty of grip from ripe phenolics that give shape and length without heaviness. Still youthful and somewhat introverted, this 2020 has significant aging potential; over 8–12 years it should gain in aromatic breadth, texture and complexity, rewarding patience with a long, resonant and deeply nuanced finish.
Production
Sourced from Neumeister’s oldest organically farmed Sauvignon Blanc vines in the rolling hills of Südoststeiermark, Alte Reben Bio reflects a cool, pre‑Alpine terroir of steep slopes, well‑drained, often calcareous and marly soils, and significant day‑night temperature swings. Yields are kept low, and harvesting is done by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. In keeping with the estate’s philosophy of gentle, minimalist winemaking, the fruit is carefully pressed and fermented with as little intervention as possible, often with extended lees contact in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak, to build texture and complexity while retaining the region’s hallmark freshness and mineral definition.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Sauvignon Blanc that shines alongside refined dishes: think ceviche or carpaccio of white fish, oysters and shellfish, grilled sea bass, or delicately spiced Asian seafood. It also pairs beautifully with goat’s cheese, alpine cow’s milk cheeses, dishes featuring green herbs, asparagus, artichokes, or subtle mushroom preparations. Serve at 10–12 °C in a medium‑sized white wine glass. In its youth, a short decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its layered aromatics and soften the firm structure; older bottles will need only gentle aeration.
