This is a regal Left Bank blend that seamlessly marries power, aromatic complexity and silky structure, capturing the essence of its exceptional terroir in a ripe yet supremely refined vintage. As a First Growth classified in 1855, Château Margaux stands among the elite wines of the world, and the 2019 is already considered a modern classic with outstanding aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classé shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple color, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is intensely perfumed and layered, with classic Margaux florality – violet and dried rose – interwoven with blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and plum, supported by graphite, cedar, sweet tobacco, and a touch of exotic spice and fine vanilla from élevage in oak. On the palate, the wine is simultaneously powerful and ethereal. Juicy blackcurrant and dark cherry fruit are framed by ultra-fine tannins and a perfectly judged spine of freshness. Notes of cassis, graphite, cocoa, tobacco leaf and subtle pencil shavings unfold gradually, finishing long, precise and hauntingly aromatic. The texture is velvety yet structured, with great purity and balance. While already remarkably seductive in youth, this 2019 is built for the long haul and will evolve beautifully for 20–40 years or more in a good cellar, gaining complexity, truffle and cigar-box nuances over time.
Production
Sourced from the historic gravelly terraces of Margaux, the vines for this Grand Vin are rooted in deep layers of Garonne gravel over limestone and clay, a terroir renowned for producing Cabernet-based wines of incomparable finesse and aromatic lift. The vineyards, planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, are meticulously managed with rigorous green harvesting and hand-picking of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. After a careful sorting, the lots are vinified parcel by parcel, typically in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for gentle extraction and preservation of aromatic purity. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it undergoes élevage with regular rackings to refine the tannins and integrate the oak, resulting in a wine of great polish and depth that fully expresses its noble origin.
Food & Serving
Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classé 2019 is superb with refined, protein-rich dishes that complement its structure without overpowering its delicacy. Think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, veal with morels, or game birds such as pigeon or duck in red wine or truffle sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gruyère. Serve at around 16–18°C, ideally after letting the bottle rest upright for some time. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours will help the aromas unfurl and soften the tannins; as the wine matures, a more gentle, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment is recommended.
