Crafted from Rabigato, this wine is all about texture, minerality, and purity of fruit rather than overt oak or heaviness. It’s a brilliant choice for drinkers who love characterful, terroir-driven whites with real tension and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Xisto Cru Branco 2022 shows a pale lemon to light straw color with greenish reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is quietly intense and layered: citrus zest, preserved lemon, and fresh green apple unfold alongside white flowers, fennel frond, and a distinctly stony, wet-rock minerality, with a subtle saline edge and a whisper of almond. On the palate, this is precise and linear, with vibrant acidity and a fine, almost chalky texture that feels both taut and elegant. Flavors of lemon peel, grapefruit pith, crunchy pear, and subtle stone fruit are wrapped in a savory, mineral core, giving the wine a long, mouthwatering finish. Oak, if present, is very discreet, supporting structure rather than adding overt flavor. Still youthful, the 2022 has the backbone and acidity to age beautifully for 6–10 years, developing more complexity, nuttiness, and honeyed notes while maintaining its mineral spine.
Production
Xisto Cru Branco is sourced from high-altitude, schist-based vineyards in the Douro, where poor, rocky soils and cooler exposures naturally limit yields and preserve acidity in the Rabigato grapes. The vines dig deep into fractured schist, lending the wine its distinctive mineral character and tension. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection, then gently pressed to preserve delicate aromatics. Fermentation often takes place with indigenous yeasts, at controlled temperatures, in a mix of neutral vessels (such as old barrels or large vats) that emphasize texture and terroir rather than new oak flavor. The wine is then aged on fine lees, adding depth and a subtle creaminess while allowing the pure expression of Douro whites and schist terroir to shine.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Xisto Cru Branco is an outstanding partner for refined seafood and simply prepared dishes that let its minerality take center stage. Think oysters, scallops, grilled prawns, salt-baked fish, sushi and sashimi, as well as citrus-marinated ceviche. It also pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, herb-crusted pork loin, goat cheese, and vegetable-based dishes featuring fennel, asparagus, or leeks. Serve chilled at around 9–11°C to highlight its precision and freshness. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a bit before serving, can help the wine open up aromatically, especially in its youth.
Producer
Luis Seabra Vinhos is the personal project of Luis Seabra, one of Portugal’s most respected oenologists and a key figure in the modern evolution of Douro wines. After many years as a winemaker for some of the region’s leading estates, Seabra founded his own label to create small-lot, terroir-focused wines that express the Douro’s diverse soils and old-vine heritage with clarity and restraint. Working with carefully chosen vineyards and often old vines on schist slopes, he emphasizes minimal intervention, indigenous varieties, and site expression over power or embellishment. Today, Luis Seabra Vinhos is regarded as a benchmark producer for serious, ageworthy Douro whites and reds, frequently praised by international critics for their precision, elegance, and distinctive sense of place.
